St. Paul's Parish Church
Malden, MA
St. Paul's Parish received a grant from The Massachusetts Historical
Commission allowing them to engage Phase 1 of the slate, copper &
stone restoration project. The architect prepared the specifications, and
placed the project for bidding. Ultimately, Eagle prevailed.
The St. Paul's Parish Church is individually listed in the National Register
of Historic Places and the slate roof replacement project was funded in
part by a $95,000 Round 8 matching grant from the Massachusetts
Preservation Projects Fund through the Massachusetts Historical
Commission.
Now, December is really not the best time to get started, but we ratched
up just the same. We were able install a new substrate surface of ¾"
CDX over 1.5" insulation while fastening to the rafters of the Parish over
the slate area. We were able to "dry-in" the church by Christmas. By
then, the slate arrived, and we were able to pick & choose days in
January for slate installation. By February, we were ready to remove
the lower copper roofs, and perform the same dry-in process as the
slate roof. Come March, we began installing copper panels that we have
never fabricated prior to this project, and suspect we never will again.
That's how unique the profile is. All seams were fully soldered. The
crown jewel of the project, the resetting of new limestone & the
crosses occurred during the month of May.
